Tips for Caring for Your Lash Extensions During the Summer
With Sydney experiencing what feels like the most humid summer ever, it’s a great time to remind everyone about the importance of aftercare for your eyelash extensions, especially when temperatures rise.
To start, we recommend keeping your lashes dry for the first 24 hours after application. This means avoiding exposure to excessive heat, sweat, and steam. While some salons might have different protocols, we advise this to prevent shampoo, oily creams, and other products from coming into contact with your new lashes. It’s crucial to avoid touching them during this period as well.
When it comes to products, oil is a major no-no for lashes. Oily substances, particularly before an infill, can interfere with the bond by seeping into your natural lashes. This includes micellar water, as many brands contain oily ingredients. We strongly recommend avoiding micellar water and opting for an oil-free makeup remover instead, like our LashGame makeup remover, which effectively removes most eye makeup without being harsh. Please steer clear of waterproof makeup and sticky products like gel eyeliners, as they can break down the lash adhesive. Using mascara on volume lashes can also lead to clumping and ruin the desired look.
Sunscreen is essential, but ensure it’s oil-free. Avoid spray sunscreens, as they can settle between your lashes and cause them to clump together. Look for sunscreens specifically formulated for facial use.
Cleaning your lashes is vital to remove skin oils. Did you know that your eyelids are among the oiliest parts of your body? We recommend the LashGame Foaming Cleanser (available in all our salons) for a gentle yet effective clean. Use a soft cleansing brush and avoid rubbing too hard on the extensions. For makeup removal, gently use a cotton swab (preferably the non-fluffy type) with makeup remover, working away from the lashes. Makeup wipes and cotton pads can snag on your extensions, so they are not suitable.
Avoid applying strip lashes over your extensions unless you want to challenge your lash artist. We can tell when strip lashes have been used, as the glue residue can get stuck between extensions and is hard to remove without damaging them. If your classic lashes aren’t providing the fullness you desire, consider trying hybrid or volume styles for a more dramatic look—we love to create new lash designs for you!
So, why do lash extensions seem to have a shorter lifespan in the summer? It varies from person to person, depending on individual lifestyle and skin type. Generally, clients report getting an extra 4-5 days between infills in winter. In the warmer months, hair (and lashes) grow faster, which can lead to quicker shedding. Requesting slightly shorter lashes in summer can actually help with retention, as they won’t become messy as they grow out. Increased humidity and oil production can also affect how well extensions hold, resulting in more frequent infills compared to the dry winter months.
