Is it Necessary to Take a Break from Eyelash Extensions?

Is Taking a Break from Lash Extensions Necessary?

If you adore your lash extensions (and we know you do!), it's hard to imagine being without them. They make your eyes look vibrant and fresh, and they simplify your morning routine. So, why would you ever want to take a break?

Clients often inquire about the need for breaks to protect their natural lashes. Their primary concern is whether lash extensions are causing harm or accelerating the shedding of their natural lashes. The good news is that when applied correctly, eyelash extensions can be worn continuously. As long as the extensions are appropriately sized, weighted, and thick for your natural lashes, they shouldn't cause any damage. Personally, I’ve worn lash extensions for over ten years with no issues and have only taken one four-week break, which was for a long vacation!

It's essential to remember that your natural lashes operate on a growth cycle similar to hair. New baby lashes are continually emerging while older ones shed when their time is up. During your infill appointment, your lash technician will look for new, strong lashes ready to hold extensions, ensuring you maintain a full and fabulous lash look.

At Lady Lash, your natural lash health is our top priority. If we believe the extensions you want could potentially harm your natural lashes, we'll evaluate them and suggest alternatives that create a similar effect without the added weight. We monitor your lash health throughout your time with us and will keep you informed of any changes. However, if you feel the need for a break, that's perfectly fine! Just like Ross and Rachel, sometimes a break is necessary. Here are our top tips for recognizing when to take a break and how to handle it.

Options for Taking a Break

Choose Your Removal Method.
When deciding to take a break, you can either let your lashes shed naturally over time or visit the salon for professional removal. A typical lash set may take around five to six weeks to shed completely, though a few stubborn lashes may remain. If this gradual approach works for you, go for it! For those wanting a quicker transition, professional removal is recommended. Our technicians use a specialized removal serum that gently slides off the extensions. We advise against at-home removals, as it’s difficult to ensure they won’t damage your natural lashes. Our professional products are quick and effective, and trust us, you’ll want an expert’s help for this!

Consult Your Stylist.
Your regular technician is the best resource when it comes to taking a break. Their expertise can guide you on the best steps to take to restore your lashes to optimal health. Many of our stylists have had clients returning for nearly a decade, allowing them to track their lash health from the very first appointment. With safe application techniques and occasional breaks, maintaining beautiful lashes is definitely achievable in the long run.

Consider a Lash Serum.
Using a lash serum is a smart way to enhance your natural lashes during a break. These specially formulated products are designed to promote the growth of longer, stronger lashes. Many effective serums contain nourishing and stimulating ingredients, showing results after a few weeks. Pairing a serum with your break is like a spa day for your lashes! Our top recommendation is the Lash Game Lash Safe Growth Serum, which has delivered fantastic results in our tests.

Exercise Patience.
If you've had a bad experience with lash extensions from an inexperienced technician (think $30 express volume!), your natural lashes might be in rough shape and need more time to recover. If this describes your situation, we highly recommend taking a break, especially if you notice gaps along your lash line. If your natural lashes look a bit patchy, consider a very light or natural set while they regain their strength.

Timing Your Break.
There’s no strict rule on how long you should go without extensions, but we suggest a minimum of one month. This period allows your lash cycle to reset, giving time for those new lashes to grow strong. It also provides an opportunity for any lash serums to work effectively! Timing your break before a significant event can also be a lovely way to treat yourself, especially if you usually prefer a glam look. Some clients opt for months without extensions, while others prefer to take just a short break—ultimately, the choice is yours!
